Hydrogen ion concentration-
Sorenson gave a new term pH to express hydrogen ion concentration. “pH is the negative logarithm of H+ ( hydrogen ion) concentration.”
pH=–log[H+] or pH = 1/log[H+]
[H+]=10–pH
pOH= – log [OH–]
pOH= 1/ log [OH–]
Kw= [H+][OH–] = 1×10–14
Kw= ionic product of water= 1×10–14
pKw = pH+ pOH
pH+pOH =14
pH Scale-
If (H+)= 10–7, pH=7 then Solution is neutral
If (H+) > 10–7, pH<7 then solution is acidic
If (H+) < 10–7, pH>7 then solution is alkaline
