Rounding off the Numbers-
Round to the Nearest Hundred
Ex- 1650
i) Identify the hundreds digit, that is 6 in 1650
ii) Identify the next smallest place value, that is 5 in 1650
iii) Is that digit greater than or equal to five? Yes, so round up.
iv) Increase the hundreds digit by one, then it 6 becomes 7. Every digit after becomes a zero.
1650 rounded to the nearest hundred is 1700
Round to the Nearest Ten-
Ex- 124.5
i) Identify the tens digit in the 124.5 that is 2.
ii) Identify the next smallest place value that is 4 in 124.5
iii) Is that digit greater than or equal to five? No, so round down.
iv) The tens digit remains the same as 2. Every digit after becomes a zero. Digits after the decimal point are dropped.
124.5 rounded to the nearest ten is 120.
Round to the Nearest Ten-
Ex- 197
i) Identify the tens digit that is 9 in 197
ii) Identify the next smallest place value that is 7 in 197
iii) Is that digit greater than or equal to five? Yes, so round up.
iv) The tens digit increases by one so, 9+1=10, now carry the 1 and add digit in the hundreds place that is 1 so it becomes 2. Each digit after it becomes zero.
197 rounded to the nearest ten is 200
Round to the Nearest Tenth-
Ex- 0.56
i) Identify the tenths digit in the 0.57 that is 5.
ii) Identify the next smallest place value that is 7 in 0.57
iii) Is that digit greater than or equal to five? yes, so round up.
iv) The tenths digit increases by one & becomes 5 + 1 = 6 and the remaining digits after the decimal point are dropped.
0.57 rounded to the nearest tenth is 0.6
Round to the Nearest Hundredth-
Ex – 3.642
i) Identify the hundredths digit in 3.642 that is 4.
ii) Identify the next smallest place value that is 2 in 3.642
iii) Is that digit greater than or equal to five? No, so round down.
iv) The hundredths digit remains the same that is 4. Drop the digits to the right of 4.
